Bikram Yoga

Bikram yoga is best practised by those students who are already physically fit and supple as it is a very intensive practise. It consists of 26 postures and there are 22 breathing exercises, it has been nicknamed hot yoga and was developed in California and then brought to Los Angeles and the postures are performed in a very hot environment of at least 40.

Bikram yoga is probably one of the most intensive of the hatha yoga styles but the benefits are vast. Because the heat is so great within the room, your body will become much suppler in a far quicker period of time. It is important however that all students are sensible and drink plenty of water before attending the yoga class and of course directly afterwards as it is essential that all of the fluids lost through sweating is replaced.

Bikram yoga improves the metabolism and cardiovascular functions; it helps to improve sleep patterns and promotes a more efficient digestion. Other important benefits include improving memory, clarity of mind, confidence and a general feeling of being leaner and of walking tall. There is an almost indefinable something which the yoga student achieves as a result of regular practise. Yoga can help to combat stressful situations, stop the students' attention from wandering and helps to turn the attention inwards so that the student becomes aware of all the changes occurring within and truly connects with their mind, body and spirit.

As with all yoga styles, it is important to have regular practise and ideally, this should occur at least three times a week, but ideally a short practise daily is better than a long session fitted in once a week. There is no doubt that having a qualified teacher enables you to ensure that you have the correct alignment within each posture so that you gain the full benefits as with correct alignment comes confidence in each pose. Attending a yoga class also provides the opportunity to get to know other students who have similar interests and so this interaction affords great social opportunities and encouragement.
