Kriya Yoga

Kriya yoga is one of the lesser known of yoga studies and most people who have contemplated learning more about yoga in general appear to be attracted to Hatha yoga, as this is the yoga group which typically focuses on the physical postures which are extremely important for health and suppleness. But yoga is about more than just the physical postures and if you are interested in learning more about the spiritual side of yoga, then incorporating a general study of Kriya yoga would be a useful practise.

Traditionally it helps if you have studied an aspect of Hatha yoga for about a year or more first and this is because you have to be able to focus and dedicate yourself to the Kriya path as it is very in-depth and there is much to learn.

All of the different yoga paths work towards enlightenment and opening up the access to the life force contained within all of us, but Kriya yoga focuses on releasing the energy contained within the spine. This powerful energy can clear blocked channels and balances that all important inner energy.

In yoga the breath is life, so it makes sense that much focus in on how to breathe correctly and on controlling the breath, as a Kriya yoga student, you will try to master the breath so that all the energy generated is sent around the spinal energy centres.

This is not particularly a style which should be practised without a good teacher, although there are some informative and easy to comprehend books on the subject. A teacher will be able to guide you so that you reap all of the many benefits although be aware that a deep level of commitment is essential.

Kriya yoga is not meant to replace other styles of yoga; it should be done in conjunction with one of the many hatha yoga styles so that the body remains fit, healthy and supple. This then ensures that mind, body and spirit become balanced and this will help you to feel calm, peaceful and ready to cope with all of lifes' problems.
